Watching with Purpose

In my work designing training for child welfare specialists, I noticed that videos were often followed by long lists of recall questions about details learners had no reason to remember. I wanted the video to become a learning experience, not just something to watch and then be tested on. So I give every viewing a purpose: learners know what to look for, watch for specific skills, make decisions at key moments, and connect what they saw to their own practice.

Trauma-Informed Instructional Design

In my work designing training for child welfare specialists, I’ve seen how often learners are asked to sit with stories of harm, loss, and crisis, and how much those stories can stay with them. I’ve learned that people can absorb new skills when they feel overwhelmed, no matter how well the content is built. That is why I design with safety, choice, and moments to pause and breathe, so learners can stay present and actually learn.
